Tennessee Volunteers new head coach Jeremy Pruitt will hold his first game week press conference today at noon. Watch it here and discuss it below.
Last year this time, I’d load this up and then look to see whether there were more likes or unlikes on the YouTube stream, before the press conference even began. So far, so good for Pruitt, as he does not yet have any dislikes.
Opening remarks. Everybody’s excited to get started.
WV, good QB, big up front. Experienced. WRs, two guys probably caught over 150 balls alone, they’re good. They’re also committed to running the ball.
Multiple on defense, create a lot of negative plays. Opportunistic. Generate turnovers.
Kicking game: Really good skill players; aggressive.
We’ll be fired up and ready.
Difference between Sam and Jack.
Basically the same.
Jahmir Johnson.
Wasn’t here in the spring. Missed 6-8 practices in fall due to stomach bug. Last two weeks, he’s been there. He’s learning. Some good upside.
Pressure on Will Grier, and new fair catch rule on kickoffs.
Pressure: QB already has a lot of pressure, RPOs, etc. He does well. There are a lot of different ways: [lists them]. DBs place limitations on defense.
Kickoff rule: I see why they did it. Don’t want to share what our philosophy is right now.
Ties to Nick Saban:
There’s a lot. Game week, the most important, do what your players can do. What we know doesn’t matter, it’s what the players know. Don’t ask them to do anything you know they can’t do.
Starting QB?
With all positions, we still have competition. Best teams, guy who starts first might not start later. MVP late may not even play at the beginning. May be some guys with more ability but just don’t understand enough yet. Fluid.
Punters.
Both have done well. Fast, accurate and consistent. Good competition, made both better. Make a decision later this week. Could see both kicking this fall.
Some players have experience with Grier, does it matter?
No.
Returners kicks and punts:
We’ve worked several guys, creating depth. Some have experience, some don’t. Put them out there. Been working a lot. We’ll narrow it down by Thursday or Friday.
2-deep, 11 newcomers. What you expected?
Can’t really predict, all we can do is base off how they’ve done. Lots of competition at every position. Makes guys improve. It’s improved our football team just b/c of competition.
Trey Smith playing LT:
Lots of guys competing up front. What’s your best five. Different combinations. We’ll play a lot of guys. We’ll see how it goes, but Trey is good pass protector, has good size, solid run blocker, best pass protector put at LT.
Emotions for season openers as head coach vs. coordinator:
Same as when I tee off at golf course. Want to win. Excited. Always. Past doesn’t matter. Reset each year.
Most important things this weekend:
Take care of football. Two most important stats are turnovers and explosive plays. Must create the latter and take care of football.
Taylor and Thompson? at corner:
Guys are competitive, not a lot of experience. All over everywhere there’s a bunch of guys doing stuff they’ve never done before. If you’re made the right way, that’s what they want.
Confidence lever in OL compared to August 2:
A lot of better, we’ve practiced more. We’ve improved. Some guys back. Chance Hall back, Trey back, more competition. Moved guys around, better depth. They’re working extremely hard. We’re better than the first day.
Safety next to Nigel, Micah right choice:
We have a bunch of guys playing safety. We’ll see about this week.
I must say I liked that he called out the media speculation versus what he sees on the practice field.
[unintelligible]
Any team you play, better be mentally tough. It will be loud, hot, external factors. If you’re mentally tough, you can block it out.
Georgia, started 3 true freshmen in secondary:
We did play a lot of young guys. We play the best players. Sometimes that’s freshmen. We’ll make mistakes, key is keeping poise, playing next play, believing in what you’re trying to get done.
Sooo….didnt see anything notable at all in this press conf. Like nothing. My orange tinted glasses tell me pruitt has some things up his sleeve
