Report: Tennessee finalizing deal to hire Greg Schiano

USA Today’s Dan Wolken is reporting that Tennessee is finalizing a deal to make Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano its next head coach. Schiano apparently became the focus of the search in part due to Dan Mullen “stalling with the Vols in an attempt to wait and see what happens with the opening at Florida.”

With names like Dan Mullen, Matt Campbell, Mike Leach, and Chris Petersen still floating around as late as yesterday, fans are in an uproar, some for the wrong reasons and some for the right ones.

As of the time of this post, it is not yet official, but VolQuest has confirmed the USA Today report that Tennessee is finalizing a deal for Schiano.

How do I feel if this is true?

Terrible. He was a decent coach at Rutgers. But I seem to remember a rep of him being a total *FULMERIZED* there, which seemed to be confirmed during his brief stint in the NFL at Tampa Bay.

And let’s not forget the icing on top of the cake, he knew about Sandusky at Penn St. and was one of the ones who did nothing.

I really hope this is a final misdirection before almost anyone else is announced as the next HC.

It was Mike McQueary testimony. He’s the one who broke open the case as a whole. So I tend to believe him and don’t think he’d have a reason to lie about it. And given the other stories about how Schiano acts in general, they lend more credence in my mind.

But, to be fair, it could be false. I still don’t like it. Nor am I thrilled about it from an on-field perspective.

I think if we end up with Schiano and Mullen goes to Florida I think I’ll be sick. While Florida was going for Kelly, Currie should have contacted Mullen. I just thought Mullen wasn’t interested in leaving State, but from what I heard Currie hasn’t even interviewed or visited Mullen yet. If that’s true then that’s the worse decision Currie has made so far. Have to wait and see if Schiano’s hiring will beat that. Now I’m hearing that Schiano has Sandusky baggage and his Ohio State defense allowed 55 points to Iowa which is more than Tennessee allowed in… Read more »

If Peyton doesn’t like the Schiano for his dirty kneel-down plays and doesn’t support him that will just up the heat on Currie.
